The UUG Book Club started in September 2014 and new members are always welcome. Our goal was simple: to provide a place where the reader and book meet and a journey begins. The benefits to joining a book club are many. For instance, there is the potential to bring strangers together and start new friendships. Sometimes you read books that you would ignore on a bookshelf. By being introduced to new genres and styles, you then see the perspectives of different people and different cultures

The UUG Book Club meets monthly, the 2nd Wednesday of the Month from 3 -4:30 PM. This allows us enough time to adequately discuss the current book and to choose a book for the following month. We try to include non-fiction, biographies, historical fiction, and fiction. We also strive to choose books that are readily available from local libraries. Over the years, some of our selections have included:

  • Candice Millard’s Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President
  • Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Malcolm Gladwell’s, Blink
  • Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s A Path Appears: Transforming Lives, Creating Opportunity
  • Laura Hillenbrand’s Unbroken
  • David George Haskell’s, The Forest Unseen
  • Atul Gawande’s Being Mortal
